The Painter's Palette: A Journey Through the History of Colour

I've drawn inspiration from the pigments that have accompanied human evolution, from the Neolithic period to the industrial age, shaping art and colour perception. The 24 yarns you'll discover faithfully replicate—through the magic of modern dyeing—these legendary shades.

The beating heart of my palette lies in the earth tones, a chromatic journey that spans from the reassuring Verona green earth to the warm embraces of Sienna earth and the mysterious depths of umber. Their fascinating burnt variants add reddish notes, while the yellow and red ochres, universal and timeless, merge into a range of browns, greys, and blacks. These latter hues originated from an ingenious alchemy of organic substances: from wood or bone charcoal, memories of ancient fires, to cuttlefish ink and the soot carefully collected from oil lamps.

Infusing vitality and balancing the earthy palette, a vibrant and luminous touch comes from the oldest mineral pigments. Discover the allure of vermilion or cinnabar, the depth of malachite, the intensity of azurite, and the nobility of lapis lazuli, a treasure of the ancient Egyptians. It is these brilliant reds, greens, and blues that dance in harmony, enhancing and completing the richness of the earth tones.

My chromatic journey concludes around 1724 with Prussian Blue, a rich, dark blue. Although accidentally discovered, it's often recognized as the first modern pigment, and its creation signaled the beginning of a new era. This turning point has gradually supplanted older colours (often costly or toxic), ushering in modern, bright, and vibrant tones in art that fundamentally changed our perception of colour.

Harmony is key: The entire palette is made up of SEMISOLID and TONAL predominantly mixed starting from primary colours. This process guarantees extraordinary depth and texture, and ensures that all the distinct historical shades are united by a cohesive chromatic thread that will combine beautifully in any of your projects.

• Coverage: I ship globally. If your location isn't available at checkout, please contact me for a custom shipping quote.

• Outside the EU (Taxes & Duties): You may be charged import tariffs and duties by the carrier prior to delivery.

• Etsy Purchases (UK & Selected Countries): You can also buy from my Etsy shop, which collects taxes for some countries (including the UK) so you pay taxes upfront and avoid surprises.
